The Library and Knowledge Services team offers training courses to enable you to find and evaluate information and evidence more effectively, when you need it. Our training is currently either delivered via Microsoft Teams, or face-to-face.

Our training can also be delivered on an individual one-to-one basis, or to teams or larger groups, at a time and place that suits you. To book a 1:1 or group training session, please complete our training request form.

Getting the best out of your OpenAthens Account
An OpenAthens account helps you unlock access to all library e-resources. During this session, we'll help you set up an account, and give you a demo to help you access and use library e-resources.

Effective Searching Skills
Do you want to learn how to find relevant evidence to support patient care, service improvement, a quality improvement project or research study? We can teach you how to:
create a search strategy and methodology from a search question
develop and use techniques that can make your search more effective and comprehensive
identify the key concepts within a question and the relevant alternative terms, different principles and techniques for searching

Critical Appraisal
This session covers the basics of critical appraisal and to help you to build confidence to use critical appraisal checklists and tools, to begin to evaluate a research paper.

Starting a Journal Club for Beginners
This session introduces you to the process of starting your own journal club for your department or team, including its structure and format. It gives a broad overview of critical appraisal techniques used to discuss and appraise a range of research papers in your journal club meetings.

Online Patient Information
Finding online patient information you can trust can often be a challenge. Misinformation and bias can affect the quality and accuracy of online patient information. This session will show you how to find trustworthy, high quality, online patient information to use in leaflets, and to share with patients and their families or carers.

AI Literacy
Curious about AI, but not sure where to start? This session will take a balanced approach to guide you through confusing jargon and help to explain what AI is, provide cautionary advice and help you to understand how (and if!) it can help you.

Health Literacy
Poor health literacy can negatively impact patient treatment outcomes, medication adherence and appointment attendance. We can help you to recognise what poor health literacy looks and feels like and teach you communication techniques which can be used to help a patient better understand their treatment.

Publishing for Beginners
This session is aimed at any staff interested in getting published for the first time. It introduces subscription and open access publishing models, explaining their benefits and drawbacks. It outlines techniques for identifying appropriate journals and highlights the dangers of predatory publishing. Finally, it introduces core concepts including peer review, research data, and authorship criteria.
